To Motorize or Not to Motorize

We are no strangers to the thrills of motorization. It can sometimes be challenging for you as a homeowner to know if the ease justifies the cost. It truly is up to each individual if they are willing to upgrade their home with motorization but we hope to answer some questions you might have along the way.

Q: What is the difference between motorization and automation?

A: Motorization is when the product is motorized and uses a remote or wand to operate. The remote is handheld or wall mounted for ease of use. Automation takes this a step further by connecting the shade to a hub system. The hub allows you to control the shades from anywhere in the world. It also lets you use your home devices to control the shade.

Q: What products can be motorized?

A: Almost all products can be motorized! The most common products that we work with are cellular shades and roller shades. We have installed motorized shutters, verticals, and draperies in the past and offer motorization for horizontal blinds. If you want to experience some of the motorized products visit our showroom to see how easy they are to use, how quiet they are and which product best fits the style of your home.

Q: What shades should be motorized?

A: Based on our experience most customers look to motorize shades that are larger (any shade over 144" must be motorized) or more difficult to get to, like over a bathtub. Another reason is the ease of use, for example, if you have 8 shades on your lanai it would be easier to push a button and all the shades move to the exact location you need rather than to manually move each shade. Many will also look to automation for the extra security of making it look like you are home by controlling your shades from wherever you currently are or keeping the shades on a set schedule.

Q: What type of motors does Blinds 4 Less use?

A: We work with different motors depending on the size and specification of your product. Typically we use motors that are rechargeable. This allows us to switch out motors with ease if necessary. The most popular motor we work with is Somfy. Somfy leads the industry in quiet motors that last many years with few problems. They also have the ability to work with larger shades. Another well-known company we use often is Rollease. Depending on your unique window specifications we can work with you to find which motor will best suit your needs.

Q: How much does motorization cost?

A: There are hundreds of fabric options that impact the pricing of the product. We recommend that you stop by our showroom or set up a free in-home consultation to select a product and fabric so we can give you a definite price for your project.

We hope this has helped you with any questions you have about motorization. Remember, you will be the one looking at and operating the shades every day, make sure you are happy with your decision first. Please reach out to us with any more questions or to set up your appointment today!.
