Roller shades are designed to diffuse the amount of light that comes into the room. They come in sheer, light-filtering, and room-darkening options. Most roller shades are made of polyester, however, some can be blended materials. While they do help with sun protection, that is not the primary function of roller shades. Sheer roller shades do not provide privacy, instead, they offer a visually pleasing experience of your window opening. Light-filtering shades provide a glowing effect while giving you privacy. Room-darkening shades completely block the light that comes into the opening.

Solar shades offer protection from the sun. Most solar shades are made from fiberglass, vinyl, or PVC. This makes them mildew resistant. Solar shades come in different opacities. The tightest being 1% open and going down usually to 15% open. The tightness of the weaving you select will impact your visibility through the shade. It is important to note that while people might not be able to see in during the day, at night people may be able to see into your home/lanai when lights are on.
